Follow Beijing’s modern arts trail on a guided tour. Start with a visit to Red Gate Gallery, the first modern art gallery to open in Beijing in 1991. The gallery remains highly influential in the Chinese art world. Explore the works of art on display and admire the unique, old watchtower within which the gallery is located. This juxtaposition of old and new is a perfect example of Beijing’s contrasts.

Continue on to the Beijing 798 art district, located in the emerging Dashanzi neighborhood. 798 was established in the 1990s by local artists who renovated abandoned factories and converted them into cafes, galleries, and workshops. Spend time wandering through the eclectic mix of shops, stopping to browse for pottery, homewares and art. Alternatively, take a break at one of the many cafes or bars and sit back and watch the world pass by. One of the highlights of the Beijing 798 art district is Caochangdi gallery.
